Our life or our car?
ENVIRONMENT VS CARS IN BIG CITIES
Natural environment is the nature around us, the Earth, soil, air, water, sea, rivers, lakes, climate, and generally the space in which living and moving man, source of life and supply of goods. Natural environment is a basic value, such as the life or property, and is a regulatory factor in the life of the individual.
It is therefore the nature somewhat a loving mother, because it maintains and protects. But in our days man turns his arms (exhaust, chemical substance, etc) against it, forgetting its value. Forget that without this the life is impossible, the destruction of the environment means destruction of human existence and painful death. Nature and man, dies together. Ecologists, all Nations, all Governments, all peoples should ensure the protection of the environment. Economic development must foresee to improve the life, the quality of life and not aimed at accumulating material goods and acquisition. The economy must be a means and for the sake of a healthy and pleasant life in a clean and beautiful environment. International organisations and committees can and should play a decisive role in this matter. The United Nations, UNESCO, the World Health Organization, representatives from each country should work closely and intensively to resolve this hot problem. We all have to protect the environment.
Let’s protect the environment on which our life and our existence depends!!
INTRODUCTION
The deterioration of people's lives, especially in big cities is rapid because of pollution, but also the overall contamination of the environment. The dream for a better life in urban areas is becoming a nightmare while already visible changes from the destruction of the environment in our everyday lives such as the effects experienced by the extreme weather conditions. It is necessary therefore, consciousness to all citizens that the European model of development cannot be based on the depletion of natural resources and in disregard for the environment with which we are intimately connected.
Pollution and Car
Driving a car is the most polluting energy that can be committed by a citizen. The exhaust emissions of vehicles is increasing in Canada and the United States despite the efforts to make the machines more profitable despite the addition of anti-pollution equipment in them. The main reason is that cars are becoming increasingly large, although Jeep and sports cars replace the lighter passenger cars. The average new vehicle in the year 2001, consumed more fuel than the equivalent in the year 1998. In the United States in 1987, the cars travelled averaged 25.9 miles per gallon of fuel. This proportion decreased to 15.7 miles per gallon of fuel in 1998 and continues to fall as much as larger vehicles to replace the smaller.
The car has become the number one way of transport, but at the same time, and the biggest problem for the pollution of the environment. Because putting a strain on the environment through the exhaust, compounds (such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, smoke, lead, etc.) which could cause serious damage to the respiratory, circulatory, and nervous system of man, without ignoring the fact that some of these are carcinogenic. The cars are responsible for 80-99% of air pollution on the traffic's total pollution is 60% for carbon monoxide, 30% for oxides of nitrogen, 50% to 3.5% for hydrocarbons and sulphur dioxide. Bearing in mind that the exhaust gases are emitted in the human breathing, cars are ranked among the biggest polluters of air pollution in cities, with a turnout of 80-99%. (Dr. k. Fytianos, workshop for road transport, environment and economy, Athens) has found that a large proportion of emissions of sulphur dioxide is the main cause of deposition caused damage to land, in rivers, lakes. The problem is that the cost of reduction is very large. The problem of pollution shall be examined and treated at various spatial scales. A spatial scale, which is in direct connection with urban pollution and whose study is necessary for the proper management and urban environment, regional/cross-border pollution. The reason is that to deal with a local pollution problem should consider all parameters involved in the topic, and usually one part is the pollution transported from other regions, the atmosphere does not know borders. In Europe because of the distances of the cross-border effects of pollution are more obvious. The fact is that the world has been great progress in reducing air pollution and its harmful consequences. We have found that eliminating over long distances is difficult. Another difficulty is that of understanding of the Government. Nevertheless, attempts are made to find low-cost methods, which will reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. There is a need at European level, information and training of persons involved directly or indirectly with the issues of environmental management in order to be able to deal comprehensively and in accordance with European legislation, the environmental problems. The polluting effect of vehicles relates to the quantity of fuel used, produced pollutant resulting from their combustion, with age of vehicles – an older technology cars are considered more polluting than the newer technology, which is not always the case. The factors participating in an increase or decrease of noxious exhaust of cars are:
1. Fuel mixture.
2. Design and construction of the engine.
3. How the Elimination of harmful exhaust gases.
We must start thinking of using more the public transport and avoiding the use of the car for micro-movements. Changing attitudes is a process that requires too much time. Awareness-raising campaigns help too, especially the new ages and hopefully in the future, the car will contribute less to the pollution of the environment. Don't forget that today, according to studies that have been made-approximately 80% of pollution caused by cars.
We should protect the environment on which life depends, and our existence as well!!
What can we do? Driving less.
